CLINICS
Health Promotion
Health promotion clinics and screening
of lifestyle activities are performed by our practice sisters. Areas covered
include smoking, diet, exercise, alcohol, blood pressure, cholesterol, urine
testing for diabetes etc.
Asthma and diabetes clinics are
up and running. If you would like to find out more ask at reception.
Family Planning
All the doctors provide contraceptive
services.
Repeat prescriptions for the oral
contraceptive pill can be arranged through the practice sister. The injectable
contraceptive is also available.
Child Health
Surveillance
All children are offered developmental
checks as per the Red Book.
Parents will receive appointments
automatically for their children via the computer call-up system. Please contact
reception for the times of the baby clinics in which these checks are carried
out. Don't Forget The Red Book! There will also be other opportunities
for weighing and discussion of child health problems with the health visitor.
Ask at reception for details.
Immunisation
Children
The doctors all feel very strongly
that it is essential to protect children by making sure they have the full programme
of immunisation. There is a computerised call-up system and most children will
receive an automatic appointment through the post at the right time. If you feel
your child is overdue an injection, please contact the sister to discuss it.
Adults
All vaccinations (except yellow
fever) necessary for foreign travel are given by our sisters. Even for non-travellers
it is important to keep polio and tetanus immunisations up to date.
Each year a programme of influenza
vaccinations is carried out in the surgery and it is recommended that patients
at greatest risk, eg the elderly, diabetics, asthmatics and those with a history
of heart disease, take advantage of this vaccination.
Please note that antimalarial drugs
are no longer prescribable at NHS expense.
Cervical Smear
Tests
Cancer of the cervix can be prevented
and all female patients between 25 and 64 years of age are advised to have regular
smear tests. These are important because they can detect early signs of a disease
which is easily treated. A call and recall system is operated to remind you when
your test is due. Our practice sister runs clinics throughout the week at various
times for these tests. Please ask at reception for details.
Minor Surgery
Some minor operations - removal
of lumps and bumps, joint injections etc - are suitable for treatment here at
the surgery. A special appointment may be needed. This almost always involves
a shorter waiting time than being referred to the hospital.
Maternity
All doctors see maternity patients
in ordinary surgeries. An extended appointment is required. The attached midwives
can arrange to see patients at both Shadwell Medical Centre - ask at reception.
The doctors share antenatal care
with the obstetric departments at St James's University Hospital and the Clarendon
Wing at Leeds General Infirmary.
Non
NHS Work
We are happy to undertake, by appointment,
medical examinations and reports for insurance companies, employees, solicitors,
fitness to do certain sports, elderly drivers etc. This work is outside the NHS
system and a charge will be made in line with the BMA recommended scale.
Please check the charge when booking
your appointment or handing in your form.
